Every once in a while I feel nostalgic about our life in South Africa. There is a long list of things that I miss, from something as small as a weaver bird to something as vast as the entire sky. Here are the things I remember most fondly from our time in South Africa, in no particular order:
- Hadedas
- Gas station attendants
- Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika
- Cape Town
- Highveld thunderstorms
- Jacarandas
- Woolworth’s
- Weaver birds
- The awesome weather
- Cape gooseberries
- Founder’s Day celebrations
- Wine tastings in Franschhoek
- Lekker and Kak
- Safaris
- Street vendors
- The Dainfern shit pipe
- Sundowners
- Eskom (ok, NOT! I just threw that one in to see if you were still paying attention)
- Domestic help
- Cricket
- Avocados as main food staples
- Yes, Johannesburg
- The view of the Magaliesberg from Northcliff Hill
- School uniforms
- People named Lucky, Innocent, and Pretty
- Namibia (ok, technically not in South Africa, but you get my point)
- Singing and dancing
- Being an expat wife
- Lion porn
- The African sky
And now, before we get all teary-eyed, here the list of Top Things I DON’T Miss About South Africa as an instant antidote to sentimentalism.
What’s on YOUR list?
